After our convincing 5-0 win against Lichfield last week (okay it was a walkover, but any win that involves 5 goals for us and a clean sheet counts as far as we are concerned!), we returned to the once mighty hunting ground of Cannock HC, (much of which seems to be being reclaimed by mother nature, including the pitch!) to play Stafford.
This was, in effect, our first league game. We had more youngsters and two subs, so the game plan was to play round the opposition and score lots of goals.
Whilst we stuck to the first part of the plan with lots of possession and several short corners, we didn’t do any of the latter in the opening 15 minutes. The almost inevitable price was paid when in Stafford's only meaningful attack of the half, a through ball evaded us all, fell ideally at the feet of their forward who made no mistake with a hard and low shot into the bottom corner of the goal.
Undaunted (but just a the tiniest bit miffed), we stuck to the plan and got our just rewards after about 25 minutes with a “route one” shot from Martin Jandu from a short, straight into the net. We continued to press but we ended the first half “honours even” at 1-1.
Not a lot to say about the second half, which if anything was more balanced and both sides had the opportunity to win but didn’t take it.
So, an enjoyable game played in good spirit by both sides, and overall, a fair result. A good solid performance by everyone, especially the younger players and a particular mention goes to Will Evans on his league debut.
